This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
