Top Selection

This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's unflinching critique addresses the oppressive nature of female beauty and the perceived horrors of advancing years. The veteran actress presents a masterful performance playing Elisabeth, a mature celebrity reduced to starring in a fitness program on TV. Edged out by her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she turns to a mysterious and terrifying procedure titled the Substance. This creates a new version of herself called Sue, culminating in a progressively parasitic dynamic between them. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This classic whodunit thriller includes the talented actress in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take a break from covering world issues to embark on a luxury cruise alongside an ailing Scandinavian billionaire and philanthropist, her partner, plus additional filthy rich passengers. However when an enigmatic female goes overboard during the evening and everyone insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Out now, on Netflix

Presence

The acclaimed director challenges his directorial skills through this nifty supernatural story captured wholly from the viewpoint of the phantom. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the filming device – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. Chloe seems aware of the supernatural presence, and it looks like defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage embraces his cult stardom in this autobiographical spoof. He plays a narcissistic Hollywood actor playing himself who takes on a $1m payday to visit a festive event in Mallorca for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by government spies to spy on the alleged criminal, Cage's unconventional method comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

The director's claustrophobic thriller stands strong without requiring a sequel. Located in 1970s Colorado, several kidnappings has made the local kids anxious. When Finney is kidnapped by the villain and locked up in a basement, he fears a fatal end. Yet the disconnected phone in the room continues to ring, with ghostly voices offering help, while the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

This Dramatic Portrait

In the conflict between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for materialism in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic of the disgraced televangelist and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who states at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye begin profiting from the American public's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, yet Chastain manages to present the character as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4

Black Bag

This period's additional entry from Steven Soderbergh presents a intelligence thriller as tight as the polo necks worn by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He receives a mission with uncovering a traitor within their ranks out of five possibilities – one of whom is his spouse. Both actors are masters of calm composure, so a delicious mental battle of deception or honesty unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema
